Have you lost your mind?

“I never knew you” are the words that God will one day declare to many who claim to belong to him, but have never truly embraced and pursued him in their hearts. The pursuit of knowing God is multi- faceted. It’s relational, rational and experiential. Many demons knew who Jesus truly was, but that never saved them. Knowing is not knodding, it is a full embracing with our hearts and minds. The danger sign might read: Have you lost your mind?

Our culture forces you to ask: Have you lost your mind?

Have you lost your mind?Jen Wilkin’s book, Women of the Word, is an excellent challenge to the women’s ministry culture many of us are caught in. Jenn owns that she believed that her heart had to guide her study. In doing so, this created an expectation when reading the Bible which made her isolate certain parts. To pursue the word of God with our hearts is right, but not exclusive so.

We are also called to pursue God with our minds. In much the same way as a single heart-pursuit of God’s word distorts the Bible, purely mind-led communities are also short changing their encounters with the living word. But Jen Wilkin’s book challenges the use of our minds.

It is important to note, it’s not an either or, it’s both. But more especially, one actually is expected to lead the other. One of them is in charge. Jenn shows us how the mind is to lead the heart because:

“the heart cannot love what the mind doesn’t know”

Just like the enjoyment of wine increases as my knowledge of it grows, so the enjoyment of God comes from engaging my mind when I read his word. So you have to ask yourself: Have you lost your mind?

“The heart cannot love what the mind does not know. Yes, it is sinful to acquire knowledge for knowledge’s sake, but acquiring knowledge about One we love, for the sake of loving him more deeply, will always be for our transformation”

JEN WILKIN

Engage your mind and we may have something for you

Okay, so you’re convinced that to pursue God with your heart requires your mind. But now you Have you lost your mind?might be faced with how to engage your mind. The Bible is a goldmine of words, ideas, complicated stories. How do we mine the treasure of God’s word?

The biggest temptation Jenn warns us of is depending on the minds of others, the minds of prominent authors, speakers or your local church leadership. It is right to utilize the joy of community teachers, but not to the detriment of your own walk with God. Jen says:

“We need to stop loving God with other people’s minds, and start loving God with

our own minds”

Have you lost your mindWe need to put ourselves in proximity with a place, ministry or community that will grow our independence and confidence to be in the word of God for ourselves. My philosophy as a women’s worker for the last 8 years has been to work myself out of a job. One’s growth should not rise and fall on the wings of other people’s input. I need to ensure that the ladies under my ministry engage their minds in the word of God and know they can read it on their own, tricky bits and all.

This is why Come Away has established the Partnership programme. The Partnerships seeks to train women to immerse themselves in the word of God, heart and mind, to grow a confidence to teach, a motivation to impart the word of God to others and the means to be equipped to read and teach it faithfully.
